Hello Tour 10 !

York or not York - that was the question! But visited England and not been in York ? Incredible! But our destination made our tour a little bit sporty. First we  took an airliner to London-Stansted. Our first cycle leg should be Stansted to Cambridge. But there was something really nice happen to change our intention. The airport is about 25 miles south of Cambridge, thus closer to Cambridge then to London. In Cambridge we spent two days to have time for the preperation and for visiting the town. Then we started straight to the north via Peterborough, Lincoln, York to Filey. The first week when we cycled the weather was very hot or was it to tempt us to north as much as possible? Because to second week was absolutely the opposite of the first. Hundreds of tons of millions of liter of water from everywhere. Thanks to our equipment which kept us dry and warm. During 5 days we made only 110 miles. The next 10 days we cycled as planed along the coast. That ment, that we had avoid more or less the North sea cycle path, because the path didn´t follow the coast. We didn´t like that. We wanted to be as close as possible on the coast. In Southwold we changed our plans and cycled straight westbound to Cambridge. There we met again Joan and David. The days together with them were a really nice experience, of course also for Jakob and Sophie. A cycle tour lifes from meetings. Read more here.

13.12.03 We´ve found some cyclists travel stories in the internet. Unfortunately nothing which suits to our planed routing from Newcastle to Harwich or Shrewsbury. It depends on the profile on the way, if we would follow the North Sea Cyclepath . Thinking on Devon and Cornwall we are realy warned. 1. Bob Lucky´s HP

2. Northsea cycle path

10.01.04 Theo was a great help for us. His homepage and his realy good report gave us many informations. But because we would visiting our friends in Shrewsbury we would change our plans and would cycle more accross the country than along the coastline. Against that is, that you may find only a few campsides on the way and the long distance. It could be 1000 km or more. That could make the trip a little bit expensive. And we love the Sea. But we have still 7 mounth to find out. 1. Gerda und Theo

15.05.04 There was not much to read on this preperation table until now. After our tour 9 we would focus on planing our tour 10. 2 and a half mounth is not much time as we know. A friend recommended us buying a Card of the Camping and Caravaning Club. 10 Pounds for a saisonal card. There ar many Campsides along the coastline, but some you may join only by showing this card. A good adress is also the CTC (cycling touring club). But to join this club is not realy cheap and makes not much sence for us, however, the club offers many thinks. Follow the link beside. Finding out a ferry from Europe to Grait Britain is a hard work. We have not realy a good solution for our transfer. Camping und Caravaningclub

a good Campingpage

20.05.04 Gosh ! It´s done. After all we had half a mind to cycle in GB. The ferries didn´t served us as we would wish. Ijmuiden to Newcastle, but Harwich to Cuxhafen. Or Harwich to Hook of Holland. To pay double for a return because the destination is not the origin for the return made the ferry passage not really cheap. And the travel to the ferry ports of Netherland would be a realy problem for us: a tandem, a trekking-, a trailerbike and additional 17 bags, to change the trains 3 or 4 times with children. We have our expirence : children in the train, the doors just closed, the train departed and daddy with the trailer stayed outside. Children picked up from the auction really bullshit. Another way for going to Amsterdam or Rotterdam would be by car. Arrival by car, put off the baggage and bikes, return the car to 250 km away Düsseldorf and than back by Intercityexpress. Or to leave the car near friends for a mounth. And if it´s stolen? No good idea.

But now we have it. On 31.07. we take an German airliner and after one hour we will have holiday, in fact were we want. On an Island ! And that´s for all of us + bicycles + 120 kg baggage for 366 Euro (about 250 Pounds). Now we´have to replan our tour again.  London Stansted - Hull - Newcastle - Norwich - London Stansted. Or vice versa ? Or only cycling. Anywere - anyhow. One mounth. All 4 of us. Tour de Maisy

28.05.04 Today we´ve got our guidebooks:"Britain"  and "Britain by bicycle" by Lonely Planet. As map we will use Travel Map 4 and 5 issued by Ordnance Survey. The scale is 1:250000. (z.B. bei Globi) Not the same as the German ADFC maps, but good enough.   Lonely Planet

01.06.04 Nick did answer us : Hi Rainer, In answer to your questions     1) Regarding cycling around the East coast of England you will definitely have no problem with hills. This part of the UK (East Anglia) is the antithesis of Devon and Cornwall - generally flat although you will find pleasant rolling hills in my area of Suffolk. Cycling right next to the sea is rarely possible in East Anglia because of the nature of the coastline; it is often marshy and subject to occasional coastal erosion. However, you should be able to plan an interesting route that takes you close enough to at least see the sea and visit many attractive coastal villages and towns. I can recommend some of my favourite places if you are interested. 2) Sadly rail transport is not as good as you have in Germany and it has become worse since the whole system was privatised over 10 years ago. To make enquiries you should contact National Rail Enquiries (www.nationalrail.co.uk). Generally, if you travel outside of rush-hour you will be able to travel with your bikes on the train (sometimes with a £3 charge).

10.06.04 After one week we did receive the Camping card from the camping and caravaning club.

10.07.04 Katja, a Cycle-Lady  from Bonn, (www.Rad-Forum.de) sent us a cycle map from London. Thank you !

Meanwhile Theo and Gerda are back from their cycle tour through Scottland:

Rainer, We are back from our trip. We came back 4 days earlier. Because of the bad wheather and because Gerda was a bit sick. The story is ready . the ducth version is already on my homepage. i'll be working on the english version next week. We had a wonderfull vacation inspite of gerda's illness. gerda and theo

You may read there story there  >>>>

We hope for us to have more luck with the weather.

17.07.04 We´ve already made many preperations: to copy many documents, to find the routing, to contact cyclists from the Warm shower list, to buy some new equipements like a tent, a slepping bag and 2 sleeping mats. All is going to become more comfortable for us. Today we packed already the bikes into the boxes. We exchanged the tailweels. For the transport we fitted the tailweel from the tandem with the sensitive disk brake on the trekking bike. Now the 3 boxes are more or less packed finally. 2 weeks are still for preparation.
19.07.04 David wrote,.

Hei! There will be no problem meeting you at the airport as Stanstead is very small and I will get up early. I hope I can get you all in the car.The bikes will go in the trailer.I have looked at your route and it seems that you have chosen many major roads. Perhaps we can advise you when you are here of better roads as we have very good maps with minor roads shown. One particular part going into London we would not advise by bike as the roads are very busy-best to take a train. We may be able to sort it out. Also we may be able to find good places to stay. Regards, Dave and Joan

What kind of lovely people live in Great Britain ? David and Joan should be two of them. We are looking forward to meet Dave and Joan.

Well - we wouldn´t give up thinking about to go by bike through London. Because, we want to meet Maisy in London. We don´t know yet, what we would do.

Because we will concentrate on the final preparation, we will end to give more informations on this page. From now you may find further infos in the tourreport. Stay tuned!!
