Hello Tour 11 !

You know - a telefonecall may change plans. It was on Christmas, the telefone rang and a voice said: "Hello, here´s Jack, we wish you Merry Christmas ". Jack ?? O Jack  !! After years to hear his voice was a really nice present on that Christmas Eve. And after the call the 4unterwegs dreamed cycling along the Eastcoast of US: New Jersey - Maryland - Delaware - Virginia - NYC. That time the 4 thought about buying a house. An own house is really important. But to live than without cycling? They became ill. And good luck - via inernet they got 4 tickets for special rate. But they had only 18 hours for the decission. Fortunately they got longdistance holidays. It would not make sence going to US for cycling for only 2 or 3 weeks. Thanks to the company.

26.12.04 Hello Friends,
We got your e-mail and pictures yesterday ! It was great to see a pictures of you three, now four !! We wish you many happy and safe trails this year and many more to come !
We do hope you can come to the US soon. The EURO is so much higher than the dollar, it should be a good time to come over. We could plan a trip together, or stay at our house and do short trips in this area. We love the back roads around here and have never found any others that are any nicer for bicycling.  So far our only trip we have already planned, is for the third week in May. We will be going on our annual trip with 20 old time friends, this year to Cape Cod, including the islands. I think you guys have already been there, in '99 right?
The pictures attached are of Lili and our 7yr. old granddaughter Haley(and her dog Dakota). We were biking on a trail that is only a mile from our house. It is about 40 miles in length, but we know many, many nice places in this state, as well as some nice quiet roads. Most people that visit NJ never see this part of it and only see the terrible, nasty, over crowded eastern part near N.Y.C.     However, if you do come here and want to go into NY for a day, we can all take a car or two and  visit. So far we have not gotten our sailboat in the water yet ! But I am hoping this will be the year of the boat. If we do get her out of drydock, that would be a fun thing for us all to do, too.
Best Regards,
Capt'n Jack & Lili

Hi Lili and Jack !

Today we´ve got our airline tickets. So we have still 6 mounth for preperation. What we want to cycle is starting from your home than southbound via Delaware river to Philadelphia, than further via Washington D.C. to Virginia Beach. Than to the north via Ocean City and Cape May to New York City (or beside). All about could be arround 1000 miles. Even now we have to investigate, how we can pass the bridge from Norfolk to the peninsula. If it could be a heavy problem, we could take a boat to Crisfield from Smith point. But we have much time to find out the best routing. Our maximum endurance per day ends arround 70 miles - in special case. Most importend is to find out campgrounds on the route after about 30 – 40 miles and where it is possible to cycle on quiet roads or roads with wide sholders. What kind of map do you use ? Here in Germany we have very good maps.

Best regards

13.01.05 Hi Bikers,
I see by your photo, how much you have grown Miss Sophie!!
And Rainer, I see you have made some definite trip plans already! I will e-mail you soon my Journal, from our 1999 East Coast Trip. When Lili and I biked north from Florida, we covered some of this same ground, passing through Washington DC, but not Philly.  Washington is of course a very, very busy area, as are Philadelphia and Baltimore too. In Washington we used a nice (but also very busy) bike path that is on the west bank of the Potomac River. Most of the regular roads in that area are NOT SAFE FOR BICYCLES AT ALL !!!!!   See my Journal !!!!
We did not attempt to cross over to the Del-Mar-Va peninsula and I will have to find out how one can do that with bikes. It may require hiring a private boat(?), or more likely, getting trucked across the bridge-tunnel. I am sure the BAY-Bridge Authority has to deal with this regularly.

In general, we much prefer to bike on quiet, scenic roads. As you probably already know, bicycles are not always given as much courtesy in the US, as they might enjoy in most of Europe. The trip you have planned will require some study, to find roads that are suitable for bike travel.

We are planning to drive to Florida for a couple of weeks, so I might be out of touch for a while. More bike trip planning when we get home in February. Tomorrow evening, I will dig up my journal and read your web pages too.

Talk to you soon,
Capt'n Jack

19.01.05 After studying the internet and several books we have more ideas which route we will follow. One part of our tour will follow the C&O Canal/Washington DC trail from Cumberland (West Virginia) to Washington DC. That´s for sure. In Wahington itself are several cycle trails.  To start we would follow the Delaware river until Trenton. But if we would cycle along the coast is not yet clear.

04.02.05 Hallo Lili ! Hallo Jack !

We all hope your are not to much bored during your holidays on Florida. Have you got your bikes with you? In the last 2 weeks we´ve studied the area round your home and around the way we would go on bike and we must say: you´re right. We shouldn´t go into "the terrible, nasty, over crowded eastern part near N.Y.C." If we would start from your home the first leg should be to the Delaware Water Gap. There are several campgrounds near East Stroudsburg. How many miles would it make? Then we would cycle further on to Scranton (about 50 miles). From Scranton we would follow the Susquehanna River southwestbound to Harrisburg, after that via the Juniata River to Bedford,(or alternatively via Gettysburg) further to Cumberland and than along the C&O Canal or Potamac River till Washington and than, of course to the Sea, regardless the millions of vacationists. If the route to Scraton is full of steep hills we have a secound option. From Stroudsburg along the Delaware river to Phillipsburg,  then to Harrisburg via Allentown, then via Gettysburg to Frederick. Third option is to start on the Raleigh Bay to follow the keys northbound via Virginia Beach, Cape May and NYC (about 700 miles ?) But Amtrak let us know they wouldn´t take a tandem with. But if we would take it in a box, who cares?

While we studied our proposed routing we remembered a movie : Groundhog day in Punxsutawney with acteur Bill Murray. Well, Punxsutawney (is that Welsh ? ) is not on our proposed routing, but Groundhogs are so sweety, that from now Groundhog Phil will tell you about the tour 11 - tour de Groundhog Phil.

Groundhog

11.05.05 Our proposed routing is planed. There are still many things to take into account and some thinks may still have to change. But it´s also a general overview. Now we can start planing our accomodation for the tour, especialy for New York and Washington DC.  Tourplan 11
